Some very common types of fungal infections caused by tinea include;
  1. Athletes foot: This occurs on the feet and symptoms include, itching of the feet and flaking or scaling of the skin around the feet.
  2. Jock itch: This is more private and occurs in the groin area. Symptoms include itching in the groin area and some red scaly rash around the groin area.
  3. Ringworm: This can occur anywhere in the body but especially on the scalp and is characterized by a raised, red, itchy area on the scalp in the shape of a ring and hair loss in the affected area.
Some common yeast infections are called Candida or Candidiasis which can infect other areas of the body including;
  1. Digestive tract (Gastroenteritis): Symptoms include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and difficulty in swallowing.
  2. Lungs: Difficulty in breathing
  3. Mouth (Oral thrush): Symptoms include sore bleeding gums, patches, or lesions in the mouth making it difficult to eat or swallow anything.
  4. Urinary tract: Painful urination.
  5. Vagina (Vagina thrush or yeast infection): Symptoms include vaginal irritation, itching, and thick white discharges similar to cottage cheese.
  6. Esophagus: Same as the digestive tract.
In most cases, fungal infections are generally treatable in healthy people but may become life-threatening and difficult to treat in people with weakened immune systems due to such conditions as HIV/AIDS, Diabetes, Steroid medication consumption, Chemotherapy, or Organ transplantation. Other risk factors according to healthgrades.com are:
  • Being too young or old
  • Wearing tight-fitting underwear or pants.
  • Douching or use of feminine deodorants.
  • Exposure to contaminated surfaces particularly swimming pools, shower facilities, and spas.
MEDICAL TREATMENT

Medically, these diseases, infections, and symptoms can be treated by:
  • Diagnosing and treating any underlying health issue such as diabetes, HIV/AIDS, etc
  • The use of antiseptic mouthwashes twice daily in the case of oral thrush.
  • The use of prescribed oral and topical antifungal medications such as Fluconazole, Miconazole, Terbinafine, Clotrimazole, etc.
Antifungal medications work to treat fungal infections. They can either kill fungal directly or prevent them from growing and thriving. However, these medications have varied side effects which are usually mild and short-lived such as itching, burning sensation, redness, abdominal pains, rashes amongst others.
